A Meaningful Experience
in My Winter Vacation
When it comes to holiday, I always spend my vacation at my grandma’s house. One of the reasons is that it is closer to my university, and the other reason is that I feel more comfortable there. In this winter vacation, I tried something that was new and fresh to me, which was to have an interview and make a video.
Because of the winter assignment, we were asked to do an interview with people or things we were interested in or cared about, no matter it was about a community or a person who meant a lot to us. After thinking for a while, I decided to have an interview with a foreign caregiver, Lia, who was from Indonesia and has taken care of my grandpa for three years. At first, I asked her some questions with a delight tone since I didn’t want to make it a serious video. Besides, she was a cute person answering my question with smiles. However, the style changed in the second half of the video. Because the most important point that I wanted to show in this video was actually came from the bottom of her heart. It was worth to tell everyone how a foreign caregiver lived a life in a foreign country for so many years and how much she missed her hometown. I was touched by her story, and so were some of my peers. There might be some people thinking that she was just an outsider, and that I concerned her because of the assignment. In fact, she was more than an outsider. To me, she was one of my family, too. I hope everyone would feel warm through watching it and would cherish the rest of the time spending with family.
It took me some time to do the assignment, but I learned a lot from this task. At that moment, I thought myself as a reporter, putting myself in Lia’s shoes. Not only did I have a deeper understanding of Lia’s life, I also walked into her heart, listened to her inner speech and became closer to her. Furthermore, I didn’t even expect that I could make such a decent video! Although there weren’t too many fancy effects or special editing skills, it was a plain but touching video.
Through this experience, it also helped me find my new interest which was to make a video. Afterwards, I went out with my family, and they suggested me to make a Vlog of our little trip. So, I videoed some commemorative fragments and tried to make it like a real Vlog just like those Youtubers did on the Internet. It was interesting and was a good way to record the important moments in life. All in all, I felt wonderful that I did something meaningful in my winter vacation.
