Great Memories in
Grandma's House

Last weekend I went to my grandma’s house in Pingtung to celebrate her birthday, and my relatives also came back which thus was a family reunion, for we haven’t seen each other for a long time, it was a great chance for us to gather together.

I really enjoyed the time I spent in my

grandma’s home because that is the place

where I grew up. My grandparents raised me

up until I was able to go to kindergarten in

Taipei. They took good care of me especially

my grandma. She is the one who loves me

most since she could always fulfill my wishes.

For example, she would buy almost everything I wanted if she could afford it. Furthermore, she is good at a lot of things such as cooking, sewing, hand making things by herself, etc. For cooking, she could make rice dumplings in Dragon Boat Festival, make rice balls in Winter Solstice, and many other various dishes. Among them, I particularly like sweat and sour pork because it is made of my grandma’s secret sauce!

Another reason that I love living there is because I can feel free to do                                                                   anything. Just like this time, I sang karaoke                                                                 and played video games at home with my                                                                   relatives. In addition, there is a tradition that                                                               the adults will play mahjong when it comes to                                                           special holiday like New Year or whenever                                                                   family stays together. I used to be a child, but now I became an adult which allows me to join them. As a guard of my parents’ money, I actually did quite well because I didn’t lose too much money until the end of the game!

The last and the most important thing was my grandmother’s birthday celebration. “Thanks to” COVID-19, we chose to eat hot pot at home instead of eating outside. Therefore, I went to supermarket with my sister-in-law to buy some hot pot ingredients. “Cheers!”, said everyone. With some red wine and drinks prepared as well, we started to pig out.

After that, it came to our birthday cake section! Everyone sang a birthday song for grandma, and she made her three wishes. While she was making the wishes, she started to choke with sobs and was nearly in tears. Her emotion made others feel a bit sad, too. I could tell there were some tears in their eyes. I guessed it was all because it was so rare to have our family reunion, and it was glad to see everyone healthy and happy here. From grandma’s perspective, she as a three-children mother, saw the whole process of their grown up, and they now all had their own families and lived outside separately. Honestly, I almost shed tears when I saw this scene.

It was not until I grew up that I started to realize how hard it is to reunite family members. As a college student studying far away from my hometown, I could feel the same and strong feeling of missing my hometown and family. Thus, I really appreciate and cherish every time we see each other.

My family is the best and the only one. As the old proverbs says, " Home is your security blanket." They are my strongest support, and they will always be. I love them forever.
